Why do college football coaches resign before they play the bowl game?

This seems very strange to me. College basketball coaches never resign between the end of the regular season and before the tournament. That would be completely ridiculous so why is it so matter-of-fact when a college football coach does it? Lloyd Carr, Dennis Francione, Houston Nutt have all quit this year and each of their teams is going to a bowl. It isn't just this year either. This happens every year.

If they're moving on to another job, it's usually to get a jump on recruiting, if they don't have another job lined up sometimes they do it as a courtesy to the other coaches, to give them an opportunity to get noticed coaching a bowl game.
