Whispers of character concerns for Mallett are beginning to be substantiated. (AP Photo/Dave Martin)
We’ve all seen the jaw dropping throws, and the ridiculous numbers Ryan Mallett has put up the past couple of years at Arkansas under Bobby Petrino. Now sources inside the Arkansas program are shedding some light on the rumors that Mallett has substance abuse problems.
NFL Draft Monsters has a policy of not publishing a story without two independent confirmations. We were approached this week, by a source inside the Arkansas program who told us the he has personally witnessed Mallett use both marijuana, and cocaine. This corroborates an account given to us a few months back, that we had been unable to substantiate.
Both sources spoke on the condition of anonymity, and NFL Draft Monsters has a policy of not compensating sources in any way for stories.
An email sent to the University of Arkansas requesting comment has not been returned at this time.
We will bring you more as this story develops.
UPDATE: Ryan Mallett has denied these allegations through a reporter in Northwest Arkansas. We at NFL Draft Monsters are standing behind this report, however, and we will continue to follow this story as it develops.

Weed in the NFL? Say it aint so! Next thing you are going to tell me is that he cant play in the NFL because he, gasp, cheats on his girlfriend…NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Wow, way to try and destroy a young mans chances at success. Stories like these are worthless pieces of garbage. Truth is people hate others for no reason and will do anything to see them fail. This is the world we live in…..
Can you prove that this story is garbage or is this just some sort of emotional outburst?
Can you prove this story is true? or are you just happy to hear people assassinate someone’s character because you have such low self-esteem and it makes you feel better about yourself?
Neither you or I can confirm nearly anything reported in the news, and I don’t delight in anyone’s downfall–especially not a guy from my home state playing for my favorite team. The fact of the matter is, you have no cause to call the author a liar–no more than you have cause to call espn or yahoo or fox, etc liars just because you can’t personally account for everything they’re saying.
And what do you know, here’s yahoo [ http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=nfp-20110222_drug_rumors_surrounding_ryan_mallett ]
with the same story…
Any apologies you’d like to make?
Guess what? I saw both Cam Newton and Blane Gabbert do cocaine and smoke marijana. Lolz…if all it takes to ruin someones career is to have 2 anonymous individuals make allogations that have yet to be varified the world of professional sports is a joke and so is our countries founding beliefs. Shouldn’t Ryan Mallet be innocent until proven guilty. I guess not. I guess we will just let sports announcers slander a young athlete based solely on accusations. Give me a bread!!!!! Return his draft stock to where it should be and leave the young man alone until you find something real that he has done worng.
Spell check is your friend! I don’t know what the “world of professional sports” and “our countries founding beliefs” have to do with this story, and I suspect you dont either. We haven’t slandered Ryan Mallett (when a lie is printed it’s called libel, for the record, something we haven’t done here either), and this story HAS been confirmed, by Tony Softli, former player personnel director and scouting director for the Rams and Panthers.
We don’t hold the power to “return someone’s draft stock to where it should be” nor do we have the power to move it in the first place.
Thank you for reading, and have a nice day.
Journalism 101: At least attempt to get a comment from the other side (Mallett). An e-mail to the University of Arkansas (which is not a person and where Mallett no longer resides) doesn’t cut it.
Irresponsible. But in this Everyone Can Have A Website age, not surprising. Sigh.
Dana: At the time we didn’t have Mallett’s agent information, which is why we contacted the University in the first place (to no reply), in an effort to acquire that information.
We have updated this report with Mallett’s refutation of it, and are currently seeking additional comment form Mallett and/or his agent.
Thanks for the response. Just seeing it. I, for one, would like more definitive “evidence” of Mallett’s “off the field issues,” and if you can provide that (as I hear you are trying to do), I’d appreciate reading EXACTLY what they are. Very tired of the speculation.
Oh wow so you guys report heresay as the truth eh? wow! that means that everything that you read in the national enquirer MUST be true since someone said they “saw it”!! geez! what kind of a crappy website are you guys to report this kind of stuff? you guys are lucky if you don’t get sued by this dude!
How are you so sure it’s heresay? Without any evidence at all, you’re accusing someone of doing something wrong… and isn’t that what you’re accusing the journalist of doing? So, it’s fine for you to do, but no one else? If you doubt the validity of something, why not do some research and instead of just running your mouth?
I wonder how the media would react to the same story if reported on Auburn’s quaterback, C. Newton.
If these sources are so knowledgeable have them explain how Mallett passed frequent drug tests for 3 years at Arkansas. Your website is a slanderous joke.
You’re being extremely naive if you think players skirting drug tests doesn’t happen. There are many, many players in the NFL who are on the record discussing how easy it is to beat them.
you’re being extremely naive if you believe someone is on drugs because anonymous sources say they are on drugs. It may be possible that he has used drugs and passed the tests through nefarious means, but isn’t it also possible that he isn’t on drugs and the sources are not telling the truth? That’s why this is gossip, pure and simple, nothing else.
With all the other cheating that goes on, why is this so hard to accept?
NCAA does not test for drugs they test for steriods. The school test for drugs but they can pick and choose who they want tested. Not everyone gets tested so therefore that is how many athletes aren’t caught. They are not all tested.
I heard it from a guy who’s girlfriend was stolen by Mallett, that he heard it from his second cousin’s brother that Mallett was a character risk. And any player can “fix” random drug tests any time.
Journalism as a profession, has been given a black eye by people like you, so pack it in, give it up and quit spreading rumor. Report the facts, Jaskass, of don’t report at all.
“Relying only on second hand accounts is usually a poor way to judge character”
You said it yourself in your Cam Newton write up.
You are correct, and I did say that, however I have more information than what I have released so far. I was only able to substantiate, with multiple accounts giving specific corroborating detail, what I have posted so far.
The persons who have spoken to me aren’t random people either, they are within the Arkansas athletic program.
If you choose not to believe this report, I completely understand, however I can assure you that I am in no way lying, nor do I have even the slightest agenda against Ryan Mallett, or the University of Arkansas both of which I have been and am a fan of.
I am simply attempting to shed light on something that has been whispered at around the internet. I put the leg work in in attempting to acquire the details, more and more of which are coming out daily.
The NFL believed the stories or he wouldn’t have been drafted so late (3rd round)! I know someone that played for the Razorbacks and he had nothing good to say about his off-field behavior. No team wants a Ben Roethlisberger.
I told him…son you betta learn to play the tight end position because you’re just too high strung…too high strung to be a good hander offer.
Yo Mallet, Holla at your boy.
When a journalist says the words “I/we stand by my/our story”, nearly all of the time it means “we’re lying, but are too low class to admit it”.
Now you’re just baselessly taking shots… which is what you guys are accusing the journalist of doing.
pot-kettle-black.
who cares let em fools hes not hurting anyone so who gives a bleep
Like it’s impossible to believe! He’s been busted once for D&D and reeking of MaryJane. And to think UAF has any semblance of serious drug tests is a little naive. Everyone remembers Matt Snort Jones. He sure played like he was stoned his entire senior year. Maybe not, but it seemed to all make sense when he got busted. And let’s not forget Jermaine Brooks! Busted for 10 pounds NOT OUNCES of pot and a few grams of coke and about 10 hot guns. You really think JB wasn’t using his connections on the team to make sales calls? It happens, it’s no indictment on the program.
He got 1 Public Intox 2 years ago. It was not drinking and driving.
Mallet was NOT arrested for drinking and driving, he was arrested for public intoxication. There were no reports of him “reeking” of pot. You folk are a bunch of morons for putting trash like this out
Cocaine is a concern, but honestly who gives a shit if Mallet enjoys puffin’ on that ganja from time to time. It’s harmless and will be legalized eventually anyway.
So I noticed it’s over a week later and no more additions were made like you said their would be. Can we now say you jumped to conclusions or do you want to keep telling all the posters here we’re wrong for thinking this story is B.S.
I said I would update this as the story progressed. Right now there are no new details, hence a lack of updates. My sources stand by their story, and Mallett was quoted as saying he hadn’t done either.
You’re welcome to think whatever you want of the story, that is, of course, your prerogative. Nothing about it, however, is a jumped to conclusion, and none of it is “B.S.”
I am in the process of investigating many of the emails I received, and attempting to determine their veracity, as well as determining if some physical evidence is legitimate, before proceeding further.
“I am in the process of investigating many of the emails I received, and attempting to determine their veracity, as well as determining if some physical evidence is legitimate, before proceeding further.”
shouldn’t this have been done before assassinating the kids character? when dealing with something this serious, at this important time in this kid’s life, maybe doing so before publishing this rumor (and that is exactly what this is) would have been the best option. if it all pans out you may look good, but if it doesn’t, you’ve unjustly harmed this kid, in an immeasurable way.
That comment meant that I am investigating the emails I have received after publishing the article. I gave due diligence before publishing the report, including having the persons verify who they were, and independently confirming specific details that could only have come from persons being at the same place at the same time.
I get that there are those who think this is a smear job, but I can assure you it is not. I am actually a fan of the Arkansas program, and in no way intend to harm it, or the people involved with it.
Mallett does not have a character problem; he has a character assassination problem. Who are these people who have such poor character, such low self-esteem, such cowardliness that they can’t say “my name is ____ and I saw Mallett do such and such”;….what reporter is so desperate for a story that he assassinates someone’s character with sources who are “low life, I would say anything to be important cowards”…I’ve been shot at, almost shot by a sniper, rocketed and I know COWARDLINESS;…what are these people afraid of….be a man reporter….who are these sources…put up or shut up….if you can’t put up….if you don’t have proof; if you can’t talk these lowlife cowards in to putting a name behind their “stories” then your story isn’t worth a damn .and your credibility is destroyed…..you are done, finished, NOT believable—the readers will bring up this character assassination anytime you post…..the people will hold you accountable the rest of your life…..man up or you have no credibility….
I really think it’s funny the amount of people who think they’re going to goad me into revealing my sources with the nonsensical attitude of “reveal them to me or you have nothing.” Watergate had completely anonymous sources, yet I highly doubt you believed those journalists were “making it up.” Given the threats I’ve received just for publishing this, and the crazy actions of Arkansas fans to other things, I completely understand my sources’ desire to remain anonymous, and will continue to keep them that way, until they do wish to come out and reveal themselves.
If that means you fail to believe the story, so be it. But don’t give me the “cowardly” speech, which is silly and not applicable. I attached my name to the story.
Confirmation from 2 other drug party participants? Doubt any NFL team even knows this site exists. None would put stock in any of the gossip.
Confirmation from two people who are a part of the Arkansas athletic program. There are about a dozen independent confirmations on the marijuana allegations.
Whether NFL know about this site or not, is irrelevant.
So “someone” saw RM use coke and weed? What was this person doing – reading Bible hymns at the location, yet to be named?
No, if they “saw” him doing these activities then they we’re doing weed and coke too, which places them in the category of “not a reliable witness”.
So my opinion is that the writer’s either:
1. Fan of another school and is using this chicken-shit blog as his real job to bash a kid from a rival school.
2. A poor journalist who uses this chicken-shit blog as his real job to bash a kid from a rival school because he doesn’t have the talent to be a real journalist.
I have my degree in journalism but I chose to get a real job so I could make money without taking pop-shots at people who are targets of social fanaticism for no other reason than they are in the public eye.
Not “someone”–several people, and no, they weren’t doing it either…which has to do with why they came forward in the first place.
As for your opinions of me:
1. Dead wrong. The Razorbacks are actually my favorite team, stemming from when I lived in Arkansas. I still enjoy watching and rooting for the Hogs, and have no grudge against the University for any reason.
2. I don’t make any money from this site, so how exactly could I use it as “my real job” …just doesn’t make sense.
I have no desire to “bash” Mallett (or for that matter, Mitch Mustain–we reported on Mustain’s arrest before any major media outlet had). I do have a desire to publish truthful material, pertaining to the NFL draft, which is what I have done. If you disagree with that, that is your right, but being petty and trying to throw in name calling and insults, does nothing to establish you any credibility with your points, and simply makes you look like some type of blind/biased fan, who doesn’t like that a person from “his” team had something negative printed about him.
What? A college kid trying drugs? This is outrageous! May he rot in hell and never even sniff and NFL roster!
Experimenting with controlled substances isn’t exactly like being discovered to run the KKK or be proven as the Unibomber. Kids will be kids. If there is further evidence to prove he has a problem of addiction or what have you, perhaps it will matter to teams and his future.
This same report could be about any of about 99% of the college-aged population in America. I’m not saying it’s right, but I am saying it’s not a surprise. That’s what kids do.
Shouldnt Nick Fairley, the speculated number 1 pick, be the focus of these character concerns??? Type his name in youtube and see what kind of playing you see on the field. I believe it was the Auburn vs Georgia game. It was sickening. Purposely injuring opposing players is disgraceful but noone says a damn thing about it. Footballs not for the faint of heart, but he was trying to end some careers that game…Like it or not, Mallet is a good quarterback. Ive never heard anything about poor character. When playing Auburn and he was injured and the Hogs backup QB was at the helm, he was jumping for joy (literally) at every pass completion.
I have to wonder what the motivation is, behind these snitches. If it’s true, & they’re worried about protecting society or some such BS, then why didn’t they take this information, to say…the cops? hogwash. My daughter dated this guy a few times, & I can tell you…an’t no way, an’t no how. This is the most disciplined guy she’s ever met, & that’s coming from the most disciplined girl, ever born. Seriously, find yourself someone else to ruin.
Of course you don’t pay anyone for stories, you are a broke no traffic blog with bullshit information. Stick to the day job and bring me some fries with my Big Mac, son…
Hello There. I found your blog using msn. This is an extremely well written article. I’ll be sure to bookmark it and come back to read more of your useful info. Thanks for the post. I’ll certainly return.
I am sure that while seeing a local star doing blow & smoking weed that they would for sure take a pic or possibly a video of this bullsheet accusation.I guess that in this day of instant video/media craziness that you are just sitting on this incriminating evidence.Waiting to spring your big news.A big fan….my arse!
How would my reporting this in any way detract from my being a fan? A fan should simply cover up wrong doing, even it it damages the reputation on that which he is a fan of?
Sorry, but I wholeheartedly disagree. I am a Razorback fan through and through, have been since I can remember, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to shed a critical eye on something, when a critical eye is needed. If this were about Cam Newton, and not Ryan Mallett, would you have the same reaction you’re having?
Benjamin … by the responses you’ve received on this two-bit blog designed to make a name for yourself on the web for shock reporting, at least two responders claim that your little article is “chicken shit” or “bullshit” and is without merit on the basis of unsubstantiated information from your “sources”. So if at least two folks maintain that your piece of scribbling is dung, then by God, it’s DUNG. Case closed. All I needed was two opinions just like you. Sophomoric sensational journalism at it’s finest. You’d do better scratching for a tabloid. So put that in your pipe and smoke it, but make sure that no one sees you, Homes. Someone just might write you up on the web.
I appreciate the “want to be clever” nature of your comment, but your analogy falls apart under even the slightest scrutiny.
1. You aren’t comparing apples to apples. I have multiple legitimate sources inside the Arkansas program, you have anonymous commenters from this site backing you.
2. I put my actual name on the things I publish, you use an anonymous internet moniker (the irony behind you calling/implying that I am “chicken shit” while not even providing your real name is quite staggering).
3. Your rant is really just an excuse for you to vent the rather obvious emotion you have for the situation, rather than attempting to admonish me through any type of civil discourse or use of fact. I suspect your umbrage has less to do with the subject matter I posted about, and more about who it was about.
For the record I didn’t post this to be “shocking.” I posted it because I felt it was newsworthy, I find it funny that the USC fans didn’t jump all over me when I broke (yes, we had the story before any major news outlet did, check the time stamp on the report) the Mitch Mustain arrest on this very same site.
It is hard to argue with the Mitch Mustain story since it is fact. He was arrested. What you have reported on Mallett is still hearsay.
Actually, the trustworthiness of your “sources” falls apart under the slightest scrutiny, Perry Mason. The problem with your jackwagon blog – as evidenced by all the criticism, not just mine – is your attempt to vilify Mallett on the basis of he-said she-said. You can’t (don’t) substantiate the credibility of your sources. So without something convincing a al Michael Phelps video, just stick to the facts. Mallett was arrested for DUI in 2009. Fact. If you want to call that a lapse in judgement … fine. Cocaine and marijuana use? The “I’ve got legitimate sources” play is too ambiguous and is overused by the unscrupulous reporter. So now you have a tabloid article and you’ve lost integrity as a journalist. Oh, and you’ve entered the realm of defamation that can carry civil and/or criminal penalties. FYI, I’m not a big Mallett-the-footballer fan, so I don’t have any personal emotion tied up in my rant. I’m just calling you out on your maliciousness of the young man. Sorry you didn’t get a response to your e-mail from the university. Darn shame. Did you really expect some university spokesperson to respond to your inquiry? No. Thus, you can infer that the university is stonewalling you ‘cause they have something to hide or that they are scared of Big Bad Benjamin’s website authority. Just stick to shuttle times and bench presses when you blog. Otherwise, go find a defense attorney.
I haven’t revealed more information about my sources, because A.) They requested to remain anonymous, and B.) Revealing more information would likely put that anonymity in jeopardy.
You can choose not to believe it, that is of course, your prerogative. But that won’t make it any less true.
Whether or not you agree with my methodology, or the manner in which I choose to reveal things (and keep some things), is irrelevant. When I can provide specific detail (as with the Mustain arrest record–which again I broke before any major media outlet), I do, when I can’t, I simply report in the best manner available to me.
It is quite obvious there is no malicious intent behind what I posted, I made absolutely no personal attack, I was fair, reported factually, and included Mallett’s denial as soon as there was one. I included my actual name in the report, and there exist many avenues through which Mallett and his attorney can reach me to further a denial, deliver a cease and desist letter, or attempt to sue me for libel if they thought that is what I am doing.
As for your assertion that you’re not emotionally involved, well, that’s an outright lie. There’s only one reason for you to be so vehement and petty in your name calling, all while attempting (and I’m going to stress the word attempting) to hide behind an online moniker (your IP address is recorded every time you visit the site), and providing nothing but personal attacks toward me and my site, all while maintaining a massive air of hypocrisy by not establishing any credibility for yourself on which I should base any of your ranting as anything other than bitter internet message board nonsense.
If you weren’t emotionally invested, you wouldn’t be posting here like you are to begin with.
My name says it all….I read your bullcrap and this type of writing sucks….
Why are you questioning the credibility of a reader? You’re the one who wrote the article. Your credibility is on the line when you cite anonymous sources for a questionable piece. A reader doesn’t have to prove anything to you or anyone else. Be a man. You threw your two cents out there and got a pocket full of change thrown back at you. Live and learn. And quit writing 88-word run on sentences. You’re getting more emotional than a 16 year old girl. I know. It’ll take all you have to hold back and not go off on my comments. And what’s up with the IP address threat. Way to turn off anyone wanting to post a comment.
=
*Sigh, I’m not questioning the credibility of a reader, I’m pointing out the hypocrisy of making the claim he was making.
You say “be a man” yet fail to attach your name to your comment, and give your reply email address as “usuck@yahoo.com” Very mature and “manly” of you. You rail on about the length of my sentences (that you counted the words screams of mental imbalance), and say I’m getting “emotional,” when my logs show you (your ip address) was responsible for over 100 page views of my site between yesterday and this morning, which one of us do you think that indicates is being “emotional?”
Perhaps, if you really think my writing is as bad as you claim (in all of the 5 copies of the same comment you submitted to my site at different times and under different user names over the last few days), you simply shouldn’t read it.
The IP comment wasn’t meant to be a threat, just signal to people typing here that they aren’t anonymous. Given the absolutely ridiculous fact that I’ve received death threats (I don’t think they’re serious, but just in case..) for typing this article, you’ll understand why I have the ip-trace software in place.
If you have any further comment, please feel free to email me at benjaminallbright@nfldraftmonsters.com
I think you’ve opened yourself up criticism with the way this post is composed Benjamin, although not quite the childish whiny criticism you’ve received. The fact that every draft analyst has sited major character concerns as a reason Mallett will potentially fall out of the 1st round, the reason they haven’t gone further or specifically mentioned substance abuse is that they’re not in a position to substantiate it. I don’t doubt your information, and imagine we’ll be hearing a lot more about this over the next few months, but posting allegations without solid proof is asking for trouble
I certainly understand the skepticism, and understand people’s position on not believing the information, I am a skeptic by nature myself. Which is why I went to great lengths to get each of my sources to independently corroborate certain details.
By the way, I want to tell you that I appreciate the way you commented on the story, it was intelligent, rational, and very well put. Thank you for stopping by here, and we hope to see you around here more often.
You’ll definately see more of me, as a Seahawks fan I came across a link to the story as there’s a lot of discussion about whether or not Mallett would be a nice pickup at 25. Since then I’ve gone through a lot of your scouting reports and they’re really well written and informative. The fact that you’ve received death threats about this article is absolutely ridiculous, try not to let computer warriors get you down too much and keep up the good work
Thank you very much, very glad you enjoyed what we do, and if there’s anyone you’d like to see scouted that we don’t have up here, drop me a line at benjaminallbright@nfldraftmonsters.com and I’ll be sure to get right on it.
Thanks again for reading, and come back soon.
Yeah, Mallett smoked some weed at the UofA. Anyone on or near the campus knows that. As for the cocaine, I find that hard to believe and never heard anything like that in Fayetteville. The problem with these kinds of stories is the implication is that Mallett was a rouge athlete doing these type of things when it’s far from the truth. Athletes at every university, on ever team, are doing these things. They are kids and kids make mistake……..
When questioned during the interview process about his off the field antics Mallett should be honest and say what he has done. Then he should follow that up with the fact that he broke every record possible at Arkansas. Passed for almost 8000 yards and 62 touchdowns against just 19 interceptions. Better than both Mannings and Stafford over the same period of time. That he spent countless hours on film study, that he was the first one in the gym everyday and the last one to leave. That he won on the road in the toughest conference in America. That he was voted captain two years in a row by his teammates and that he will be a frnachise qb for whoever is lucky enough to draft him.
Next question…….
Yes! As a SF 49er fan, recently made quite happy by the acquisition of a for-real head coach, I’m hoping to be extra-happy by Ryan Mallet getting drafted by the 9ers. He and Andrew Luck were on a level much above all other college quarterbacks in 2010, for pro potential. Any fan with some depth of understanding of the quarterback position will hope that Mallet goes to a team that can make good use of his talent. As I mentioned, I hope it’s the 49ers, but if it’s not, I’m still going to follow Ryan’s career, because he’s got it all, and leaves nothing to be desired as a player. Good luck to him, and thank you, Arkansas, for allowing this young fellow to delight the football world these past seasons.
As for the weed and coke stuff, if he’s done a little then he can pass on it in the future by saying he’s just not interested, and no one can say he’s a cherry for it.
Wow. Isn’t it interesting that when it is a white kid who has allegedly done drugs everyone is coming to his defense.
When it is a black kid doing the exact same types of drugs, he’s a thug who lacks leadership skills.
Wes Bunting of the National Football Post recently quoted a scout as saying, “I got stuff on Mallett that no one even knows about and I wouldn’t touch him.”
Ryan Mallet = Todd Marinovich
Seriously man? Pulling the race card on this one? $cam Newton has be given the red carpet all season and that dude stinks to high heaven of corruption. And who the hell is Wes Bunning?
Wrong. Marinovich was just another kid with a prodigious arm. Jim Drukenmiller, Ryan Leaf, Andrew Walter, Jeff George. . . . Mallet’s credentials are completely different. He’s going to lead his team to many wonderful seasons. It says something that he was the Razorbacks’ team captain for two years. And the pinpoint passes! Second coming of Joe Namath?
Benjamin,
I have a couple of sources that tell me you like to dress in drag and appear on stage at gay bars on cabaret night. I’m not saying you do but I stand by what my sources are telling me. Those sources, by the way, wish to remain anonymous.
Yes, I saw where you left the exact same comment on Hogville, about another poster there. Very clever of you attempting to recycle the same insult….
The difference between you and I, is that I actually do have sources who claim to have seen what has been posted, and you’re simply making some nonsense up for effect.
Between you and me, you may have sources but you don’t got good English. You probably don’t have to sweat it, Bill Clinton uses “I” as the object of a preposition, too.
There are worse things in life, I suppose, than being lumped in with Clinton. Perhaps in the future, when correcting the grammar of others, it would behoove you to use correct grammar yourself.
“…don’t got good English…” is wrong on several levels. Got should be “have” and “good” should be correct.
You’re skirting the issue. Do you dress flamboyantly for Cabaret Night or not?
I’ve never attended a “Cabaret Night” so dressing flamboyantly for one would be impossible. I’m really not sure what Cabaret Night is, to be honest, perhaps you can enlighten me by drawing from your obviously vast experience with it…
This has turned into a witch hunt against Mallett and all the little blogger dorks have to get in on the action. After clicking around on this site, I can’t believe I had never heard of it before. Cam Newton an intriguing prospect… ooohhh ahhhhh. Ryan Mallett off the field drug issues (hush hush). That is some hard hitting, original stuff. I can’t believe this guy has to blog for a living. What has happened to journalism? It is people like you that are ruining sports writing. You are so bush league you can’t even figure out how to get in touch with Ryan Mallett’s agent. So you send an email to uark.edu. What an idiot. Have you looked into the potential drug use of all the other first round picks. What are your “sources” at Mizzou, Auburn, Washington, Florida, Alabama etc telling you? Keep up the good work. I’m sure that dream job at Perez Hilton or TMZ is just around the corner.
Yes, I have looked into the character concerns of other players, Cam Newton included. If you actually had read anything on this site as you claim, you’d have noticed I included those same concerns about Newton in my Newton write up. those same concerns have been widely reported on every major media outlet all season long. If you think no one has covered Cam Newton’s concerns, you certainly didn’t watch any college football this year.
We also broke the Mitch Mustain story. We had it up before anyone else, well before ESPN or anyone else reported anything.
We strive to bring you the highest quality reporting possible. I’m sorry that in this case it didn’t seem to meet your arbitrary standard. Perhaps next time you could simply state what your actual problem with the reporting is (it makes a player from the team you support “look bad”) rather than spout off about TMZ, Perez Hilton, or laughably call me a “dork.”
Thanks for reading.
I said have you looked into their drug use in college, not character issues or pay for play. I guess you read about as well as you “report”
..and with the opening statement of my reply to you, I stated “Yes, I have looked into the character concerns of other players.” That includes possible drug use. I have heard quite a few whispers about other players, but nothing nearly as substantiated as this report.
But don’t take my word for it, today former Carolina Panthers director of scouting/ex St. Louis Rams director of player personnel and current ESPN host, Tony Softli reported today that “…Heavy rumors of drug use and possible addiction kept him [Mallett] from coming out for the 2010 draft…”
You’re just digging yourself a hole trying to insult my reading comprehension (all while massively failing to comprehend/outright lying about things I’ve written–ironically enough) and making snide personal attacks. Try being an adult, and responding with a civil tone from now on, it’ll serve you well.
I am not gonna say its impossible that what you (or Tony Softli) state is true but if he were truly addicted and not just casually using, he sure did perform at an awfully high level this past year against generally very tough competition.
That is true, but hardly unprecedented… Look no further than the Cowboys in the 90s….
Perez Hilton reported today that Lindsay Lohan vomited on her dog last night. Does that mean I should believe it or care? This Softli guy has a story that clearly says “heavy rumors”, sorry if I don’t put much stock into that. Just because a guy says it on the radio, writes it on a blog or puts it on a message board doesn’t make it true or newsworth. This entire story is based on nothing but internet speculation and rumors. He has never been arrested for drugs. Did you contact his parents? Did you contact any of his coaches? Did you contact any former teammates? Did you contact his current QB coach? Did you do anything other than hear a rumor and run with it? Maybe talk to a couple of students that Mallett was mean to while in school. Yellow journalism at its finest.
I don’t know what Lindsay Lohan has to do with anything here, but you sure do seem to read a lot of tabloid journalism for supposedly having an aversion to it.
I did contact some of his teammates, as well as several other people from the University. If you read our scouting report on Mallett, you’ll notice I included a blurb about that.
AS for the other, these aren’t “some people” reporting these things. Softli is the former scouting director for the Panthers and the Rams, and my sources are people inside the Arkansas program.
If you choose not to believe it, that’s fine, completely up to you, but that won’t make what I’ve typed any less true.
I see alot of MAD PEOPLE! lol
Why so serious???
This is just a report of someone who claims to have seen Mallet do some…not so “good” things. Thats about it.
People are REALLY attacking the writers here, WHY??
We all have to get “our” news from somewhere right??
Believe it or not, wait until it “comes true” or NOT before you attack someone.
All the people trashing you Ben are irrational Arkansas fans. If anyone actually knew anything about journalism they would understand anonymity of sources is one of the key principles of a free press. Look at how angry Arkansas fans are getting at you just for writing this. Can you imagine what these people would do to someone they knew was the primary source in besmirching their Arkansas wonderboy? If i was a source, and still lived on campus, there is NO WAY EVER i would want my name attached to this for fear of retribution by overly emotional Arkansas fans. Ask yourself if someone involved in football scouting for 14 years would ruin his credibility just to smear Ryan Mallett’s draft stock? And anyone that says you can’t put up numbers while doing drugs, well i guess you’ve never done drugs. Stick to your standards Ben, the diehard fans will always try and repudiate facts that don’t fit the idealized version of “their school”.
So basically you are writing this trash based on what you have read or heard from other internet sites? If Ryan is using such drugs as you say then why has he told every NFL team out there he will take any drug test available?!
You are ruining a kids career based on pure assumption. You do realize that correct? It’s so funny to me you have guys out there like Cam Newton who we all know was shopped around by his own father and ESPN loves the kid and can do no wrong in the media but a guy like Mallett who has done nothing wrong and had a great career at Arkansas has “character issues” and apparently now is addicted to drugs hmmmmmm.
I find it comical that none of this was being reported before the NFL combine or the NFL draft. No one cared about this whole “drug problem” before now. This is why it leads me to believe someone is out there trying to sabotage a young kid’s career before it even begins. WHY? A little Jealous are we?
I think so.
No we reported this before anyone else did, others may be repeating what we reported, but it certainly isn’t the other way around. given that you somehow missed that, the rest of your comment seems a little invalid.
As for Ryan taking a drug test, with the length of time that has passed since this reported incident, it’s highly likely wouldn’t register in any drug test administered at this time.
As for the nonsensical statement that “Cam Newton can do no wrong in the media” I assume you didn’t watch any college football this past year, as it seems Newton’s alleged transgressions were all the talk of the sports world for several months (and still are). you’re simply coming at this from a biased perspective, and not thinking objectively.
As for your statement that “no one cared about his drug problem before” that is patently false. Tony Softli of ESPN (and former Rams and Panthers director of scouting) said two days ago that teams weer aware of mallet’s drug use last year, and that was why he didn’t declare for the draft then.
As for you find it comical that none of this was reported before, this particulat article is over a month old, so it was reported well before the combine. Please do your research befoere accusing people in the future, ti’ll save you a lot of embarrassment.
this is slander-bs slander-no evidence-hey it don’t work that way-when u go to court no evidence-judge dismisses this crap=maybe u get counter sued-i don’t advocate death threat-just let ryan dump u on ur head-but he wouldn’t do that-he’d say aw shucks-the truth will set u free-this is a nice kid period and not not not any kind of addict.i don’t know what ur agenda is but u need to deal with facts and things u can prove and drop ur anonymous sources crap.people will not believe this slander.where is ur evidence–not a scrap.
Maybe he used drugs. Maybe he didn’t. It’s highly likely that we will never know. But here’s where this “article” misses the point and spreads random gossip. Let’s just say, hypothetically, that Mallett did use drugs. And let’s go even further and assume that these sources saw him do it, not just once, but over the course of two years, they saw him use drugs 6 times. That’s 3 times each year. Is it illegal? Yes. More importantly though, does it mean that he “has substance abuse problems”? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Has he partied some, like most normal college kids have? I’d bet a thousand bucks that he has. Does he have a substance abuse problem? I’d bet a million bucks he doesn’t. Hey Allbright, you keep saying what a Hog fan you are. No true Hog fan would publish this BS.
there is no credible evidence of drug abuse on this young man-just heresay-anonymous bs-his teammates say he is a leader, competitor and team player-coach says hes hard worker-don’;t sound leaf to me.hes not fast but neither is payton manning-to me his major shortcoming is throwing into coverage not hitting secondary receiver enough or throwing ball away-will try to throw with guys hanging on him like big ben-too pumped up in first quarter-as far as arrogance-coach says hes confident-who u want confident qb or chicken little-only question mark i have is his ability to find receiver on being flushed from pocket-with his foot speed he must improve here-this kid has great potential.
hide behind ur anonimity u coward–come back when u got sum real evidence-heres a rumor for u-mallett drinks pepsi instead of coke because hes arrogant.
Hiding behind my anonymity? I published my name at the bottom of the story…
Man, I get some weird people commenting here.
yea and you’ve ruined your name by printing all this anonymous bs -nobody cares for that.
Ruined my name? No less than 30 NFL teams have traded notes with me on this, and four major sports networks have offered me a job. Those who are in the know, know that I know what I’m talking about. It’s the fanboys who know nothing about the situation, yet feel the need to comment anyway, that keep saying “I’ve ruined my rep.”
Mallett character issues Hmmm! A public intox for a college kid at the age of 21! Where’s the proof of any thing else or the witness! There’s not any! Newton, stole a laptop, caught cheating and taking money from a school! Wait and he won a Heisman! HMM!
There are witnesses, that’s how this story came about, just because those people don’t want their names out there (and given the way I’ve been harassed about this I don’t blame them), you’re dismissing it.
As for Newton, we haven’t reported on Cam Newton because everyone else has reported the facts in that case to death. I don’t think there’s anyone alive who doesn’t think Newton cheated.
“We will bring you more as this story develops.”
Three months later. Still waiting.
I don’t have much new information that I can post. Several other outlets, including ESPN, have reported on the matter, with former Panthers and Rams director of scouting Tony Softli stating that this information was well known in scouting circles LAST YEAR.
When I have something more to share, and I’ve verified it, I certainly will share it. Thank you for staying tuned.
if u repeat a lie enough times even without any evidence or supporting facts-does it become truth–apparently in this idiots mind-ryan will go in first round unless coaches are blind and brain dead-if not hope he falls to my team.we could use an arrogant wigger its better than dixon who can’t throw-
“We will bring you more as this story develops.”
STILL waiting…..
STILL more and more evidence coming out… Now (per Nolan Nowrocki, a highly respected draft analyst for ProFootballWeekly) Mallett has apparently admitted to NFL GMs that he has indeed experimented with drugs.
http://www.mrsec.com/2011/04/nfl-gm-mallett-admitted-drug-use/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+mrseccom+%28MrSEC.com%29&utm_content=Twitter
an anonymous story told one million times is still the same as a lie-if cannot be used as evidence in court of law don’t use it to ruin peoples lives-a lie is a lie-repeating nonsense makes u a liar-anyway mallett is so far above these other guys its a joke.thats the real story-talk to his coaches and teammates before u peddle ur muck.
It isn’t anonymous, at least not to me. I’ve talked directly to the people. I’ve talked to teammates of Mallet’s, I’ve talked to people inside the program. Mallett has admitted his drug use to NFL GMs.
As for the rest of it, if you take the character concerns out of it, I do think Mallett is the top QB in this draft, and I think he’s going to surprise the national media with how high (no pun intended) he is selected.
yea but what u still don’t know-is what he was using -pot and beer not that bad-and at least hes honest -he could play with a needle hanging out his arm and be better than 2 of the top qbs in draft and the other kid from auburn don’t translate to pro style and reading coverages ect’ -he ran a very simple offense-watch Gruden show u see that- he won’t be able to perform against teams like steelers-
He has used cocaine, illegal Xanex, and marijuana. He has, I’ve got him on all three. As for the rest of your statement, I mostly agree. He is better than Newton and Gabbert. The Gruden show? That’s TV fluff, for people who have never done a player interview, or broken down tape. Mallett looked good diagraming a play on that show, but again, when has Gruden ever asked a tough question of anyone on that show?
i hope u realize when he sues u -these charges will have to be proven in a court of law.
i’m through worrying about where mallett goes -believe 15-40-he will take initial money hit -but in long run may be better for him-as far as ur inaccuracy issue-his team only lost three games this year all to top teams-the problem there was his receivers holding on to the ball–he could show up with a needle in his arm and outplay these clowns mocked ahead of him in a real nfl game.
we don’t even have cocaine here in arkansas unless u yaannnnkkkeeeesssss bring it here–hope he takes u to court-gonna laugh.
Get off Mallett’s nuts. You cant honestly say he didn’t/ doesn’t abuse drugs..how he acts and looks says it all. You people go through all this trouble to defend him, but how many of you have ever even been in the same room as the guy?! He wouldn’t defend any of you for anything so why waste your time defending someone you don’t even know? He either did or he didn’t, who cares. He still has other issues that kept him from being a first round pick.
obama has admitted to using pot, ricky williams went a whole season using pot , if a kid in college tries something for him self as a life experience it should t change any thing about who he can become as a person or athlete .. i live in CANADA and have seen some of the nhls young stars do some ridiculous things .. some of which have played for Stanley cup teams in the past 5 years .. get a F**king life and rate the player on how they preform and leave it at that
well the media may have succeeded in knocking down ryans draft stock-but now its his turn to shine-hes better than these jerks picked ahead of him if hes got needles hanging off both arms-now his chance will come.
You do realize that the media and media reports have nothing to do with where Mallett got drafted, right? Teams select players based on their own research, which they spend millions of dollars on. Jake Locker went at number eight overall to the Titans despite almost no media attention leading up to the draft, for example.
Mallett was passed over by every team twice, because the off field concerns we reported, and some others are true. You don’t pass on talent like that just off speculation in the media.
“… spending millions of dollars on.” Ending a sentence in a preposition by a writer? Howabout “Teams spend millions of dollars when researching players before making their selections.”
It was a comment in a comment section. I tend not to grammar police myself here. If you insist on being correct at all times however, perhaps tapping that space bar between typing “how” and “about” in your comment would’ve saved you some mockery from me…
u say ur a hog fan-ha we don’t need ur kind of fan-live in ur world of slander and smoke-because if u show up at hog stadium i’m sure someone will take exception to that-
You keep saying it’s slander, but it isn’t. I’ve been proven correct at every turn with what I published, and it’s because I’ve told the truth, and nothing but the truth. There’s a reason the most talented QB in this draft fell to the third round, are you really telling me that every NFL team passed on him three times because of something they saw on the field? Because by saying I’m lying, you’re simply saying Mallett wasn’t good enough to be drafted earlier.
heeeeeeeeeeeeeeee—mallett was accurate enough against jags—poured lasers and darts all over the place-looked like star wars movvie.heeeeeeeeeeee–character wasn’t a problem–announcer said he looked like a born leader–bb said he looked like pro qb–heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee BB WINS AGAIN–hope fish get their turn at the light show.
His on field play was never a concern for us. That said, it might be a tad early to be gloating, as Mallett was playing against the Jacksonville Jaguars third and fourth stringers. I watched the game, Mallett looked sharp (as we thought he would), but he’s playing against guys who likely won’t even make the lowly Jaguars roster.
Pats seem to be happy with mallett–so all these slander stories can go in thew trash-didnt work on BB as he does his own homework–seems to haVE paid off=as all the experts say mallett did great in his debut–all the lies repeated one million times are still lies.BB SAID RYAN LOOKED LIKE NFL QB.
Sigh. Since you seem incapable of getting it, I’ll repeat it again… Not only is it NOT SLANDER, Mallet admitted the drug use to every GM he interviewed with. This has already been established and confirmed. You really need to do yourself some homework before commenting and continuing to look foolish.
IS UR REAL NAME ZEKE ULREY–I GOT A TRUTHFUL OBSERVATION FOR U–MALLETT SHINES IN DEBUT.–heeeeeeee
BB says mallett is hard worker-no character concerns reported in boston–and BB has been pleased with his progress—–sounds like what petrino was saying–hey guess these media jerks know more than his coaches-heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
b. albright–is zeke ulrey–or twin of his–same caustic anti mallett crap.
Who is Zeke Ulrey? I can assure you, whoever that is, it isn’t me and I have never spoken with him (her?). As for me, I’m hardly “anti Mallett” I’m guessing you never looked at my scouting report on Mallett, or where I ranked him among 2011 draft quarterbacks. BTW, my name is spelled with two “l”s A-l-lbright.
lies about mallett:::–illness at panther visit-leadership abilities-dui–pats had no problems with mallett—so go suck on a moldy sock–u zeke ulrey imitator-wanta beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Yes the Panthers illness, and DUI (it was a public intox) have long been debunked, and no one here is asserting otherwise. The drugs were admitted to, just as stated above. I have no idea who “Zeke Ulrey” is, but that name sounds made up, like your new user name “ham” which still uses the same sareptacat@yahoo.com email address, as your old handle of “Mike.”
So because I’ve smoked weed and done cocaine before I shouldn’t be able to ever get a job? Character concerns should only concern teams with bad character.
If you’ve willingly violated the law, yes, it should give people pause in considering hiring you. Whether you should never be able to get a job or not is ridiculous hyperbole, and not really relevant to this situation.
nothing has been offered that will stand as evidence of drug use-just bs sources and bs drama-theres no drug addict in the world who can throw football sixty yards with accuracy-heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee this is a smear campaign and i wish he would sue u for slander.
ain’t that the gospel.
snooping around campus were u?
